9th Nov 2022: City’s first multi-tier underpass for vehicle is almost ready. Through this tunnel, light motor vehicles, motorcycles will be able to cross the New Town’s Major Arterial Road at Bishwa Bangla Gate 4.2 meters below ground level. But Trucks and buses will not be allowed to use this tunnel. The Kolkata city has a few underpasses, such as the Patipukur underpass in Dum Dum, but they are all roads built under railway lines. This is the first time a tunnel for vehicles is being constructed below a busy road. The work on the structure inside the tunnel is almost complete and arrangements are currently being made to reopen the road above the tunnel. It is expected that the tunnel will be opened before the end of this year.
